George Walton. An Arts & Crafts Glasgow School Oak 'Abingdon' Armchair.

About the Item

George Walton. A rare Arts & Crafts Glasgow School oak 'Abingdon' armchair. This design is quite radical, with large flat arms which protrude out incorporating the back legs and upright supports quite far back giving the chair a light and airy feel, the gentle tapering legs with 1/2 splayed feet gives this unique design a wonderful balanced almost feminine feel yet the continuation below the seat of the back supports giving it a subtle architectural feel and again an infusion of his own style no doubt strongly influenced by C R Mackintosh. See George Walton. Designer and architect by Karen Moon. Page 105 image attached and also see Arts and Crafts Furniture by John Andrews, Page 166. We have professionally re upholstered this in a quality green leather to match what was originally there.

    By George Walton
    Located in Norwich, GB
A superb Glasgow School Arts And Crafts oak armchair. After a design by George Walton for Liberty & Co. Circa 1895. The chair is almost identical to the George Walton design, but has a variant shaped top to the back. Literature: Daryl Bennett, 'Liberty Furniture 1875-1915'.4 Art Furniture, Page 131, plate 4.91. Sketch illustration of George Walton design. Please see photographs. The seating retains the original webbing and filling and has been padded and re-covered with brown leather and copperised studs. The studs are set how they were originally on the chair. Please refer to the last photograph showing the frame before re-upholstery. They have been slightly aged. The oak has the original patina, which has been waxed. There are some marks around the frame with an indentation to note to the top of one arm. The edges to the legs are knocked with use. The chair has a flattened curved arm with an elongated tapering back. The Abingwood design was considered some of the most distinctive of Walton's designs, strongly influenced by C R Mackintosh...
