Set of 10 Irish 19th Century Mahogany Dining Chairs by James Hicks of Dublin

About the Item

A stunning set of 10 mahogany Chippendale style dining chairs by James Hicks of Dublin. The pierced acanthus carved back splats with “shell” corners upholstered in English burgundy leather, on carved cabriolet legs with cross-stretchers ending on claw & ball feet. Stamped J. Hicks 5 Lr. Pembroke St. 8 singles and 2 carvers. Circa 1895 Irish Biography: James HICKS (1886 - 1936), a cabinetmaker, was extremely skilled at producing furniture in 18th-century styles. He trained in the cabinet making workshops on Tottenham Court Road in London. On his return set up business in 1893 at 5 Lower Pembroke Street, Dublin. He established what was to become one of Dublin’s leading cabinet making firms with a client list that included Princess Victoria, the Crown Princess of Sweden, and King Edward VII making fine veneered and inlaid furniture usually to commission.
