About the Item

Iconic set of four dining chairs, model T-0635B, designed by Katsuo Matsumura, manufactured by Tendo in Japan in 1982. Matsumura created this chair passionately hoping it would become a design that wasn’t influenced by fads. He wanted to design a solid piece of furniture that would be accepted by a wide public. He wanted to keep his design efficient and beautiful at the same time, so excessives were stripped away as much as possible. The legs are molded from two pieces, it has one backrest and a seat: a total of four parts. Because of this design there is no need for extra supports at the bottom and the chair could remain a four-piece design. The backrest is bolted to the bottom of the seat. Instead of showing off his pride as a designer, Matsumura put the values of the users first. It turned out to be a huge succes. This set is in good original condition with minor wear consistent with age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. About the designer: Katsuo Matsumura cherished a desire to create solid objects. He studied woodcraft at the Tokyo Prefectural Craftwork School in Suidobashi. After graduating, he attended the Industrial Art Training School which is a part of the Tokyo Art School. During his study, he worked part-time at the office of Junzo Yoshimura. He was hired in Hida Takayama, but the War broke out and he was send out as a soldier. When he finished serving in the army, he met Yoshimura again during their evacuation. He worked for him again and shortly after the Yoshimura Architecture Office was founded. His talent was immediately recognized and he received a second prize Mainichi Industrial Design Award at the Furniture Collection Exhibition.
