Tubular Chrome and Blue Fabric Cantilever Lounge Chair with Arms Set of 7

About the Item

Awesome vintage cantilever tubular chrome and blue hopsack fabric upholstered lounge chairs in the manner of Thonet. There are set of seven chairs available. All are in wonderful vintage condition with normal wear for their age. The upholstery has been cleaned and can be used but you may wish to recover. They are priced accordingly. Please see photos, Circa late 20th century. This is maybe the most comfortable chair ever! I can definitely attest to its comfort. We have a set of seven armed chairs listed here plus a set of seven of an armless version in a separate listing. They are made in the manner of the Cesca chair which was designed by Marcel Breuer in 1928 or other Thonet or cantilevered style chairs of the Bauhaus era. These are oversized and more of a lounge chair than a dining chair; however, we have used them around a dining table even though they are somewhat wide. All of these are in their original classic blue hopsack upholstery which has been cleaned and is usable. This very versatile Bauhaus chair design blends with and complements so many design styles; from mid-century modern to Art Deco to Streamlined Modern and Art Moderne; and from industrial and modern to modern country to rustic and primitive; or even boho chic and traditional. You think of a style and they will go or be a fabulous juxtaposition! Make them yours! Steelcase was founded as the Metal Office Furniture Company in 1912 by Peter M. Wege in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The Metal Office Furniture Company's first products included fireproof metal safes and four-drawer filing cabinets which Wege invented and manufactured for the Macey Company. In 1914, the company received its first product patent for "The Victor," a fireproof steel wastebasket. The Victor gained popularity due to its light weight achieved through a patented process of bending flat steel at right angles to create boxes, and its ability to prevent fires at a time when smoking was common indoors, particularly in the workplace. In 1915, the company began manufacturing and distributing steel desks and in 1937, the company collaborated with Frank Lloyd Wright on office furniture. The partnership lasted two years and resulted in some of the first modern workstations. The company officially changed its name to Steelcase, Inc. in 1954 and became known as the leader of the furniture industry in the late 1960s due to the volume of its sales and in 1973, the company debuted the Series 9000 furniture line. Steelcase merged three of its subsidiaries, Brayton International, Metro Furniture...

Bas Van Pelt Tubular Cantilevered Lounge Chair with Red Sisal Seating
By Bas Van Pelt
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Bas van Pelt for EMS, armchair, metal, sisal, lacquered wood, The Netherlands, 1930s. This original and comfortable chair, designed by Dutch interior and furniture designer Bas van Pelt (1900-1945), was manufactured by E.M.S. Overschie. The chair features a cantilevered tubular metal frame, lending it a sleek and modern appearance. This is contrasted by the warm, coarsely woven red 'sisal' fabric used for the seat and backrest, complemented by black lacquered wooden armrests. The combination of these materials creates an exciting visual and tactile experience. During the early 1930s, Van Pelt designed several pieces of tubular steel furniture, which were produced by D3 and E.M.S. Overschie. At that time, furniture designers with a functionalist approach were particularly interested in exploring the applications of tubular steel in furniture design. Bastiaan Johannes van Pelt (1900-1945) was a Dutch furniture designer and interior designer. As son of a book printer, he spend his time after school working in several printing companies in Holland. At that time he already engaged in topics like designing furniture, interiors, carpets and fabrics, graphic work and pottery. In 1927, he quit his old job and started to work at a furniture factory owned by his father-in-law J.C. Jansen in Overschie. Together with his brother-in-law, Jan Jansen...
