Every carpenter at that time mastered all the possibilities of woodworking: so did the Nothelfer. They could carpenter, even carve altars and figures, and set them in gold, silver and paint. (churches in Owingen and Hödingen]. Some family members lived and worked and worked in Hedingen or Hödingen, like today the jubilarian Karl Nothelfer (this in 1975). His father, Karl Anton Nothelfer, as the eldest of seven siblings, was able to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. Karl Anton Nothelfer, the eldest of seven siblings, was unable to take over his father's carpentry business in Überlingen. He instead moved to the industrial town of Singen with his young wife Rosalie, née Hanner, from the from Hohenzollern in 1896 and moved to the former Poststraße and founded his own carpenter's workshop. He had a highsense of quality and form and was already a member of the German Werkbund before 1914. Karl Nothelfer and his three siblings grew up in such air. After attending school and the secondary school in Singen, the young Karl learned the carpenter's trade in his father's workshop then moved on to the Badische Landes-Kunstschule in Karlsruhe, where he studied architecture. At that time the well-known furniture professor also worked there Fritz Spannagel, born in Freiburg in 1891, who settled in 1938 at Ittendorf Castle near Meers- burg (died 1957). In 1928, the gifted young architect received a teaching assignment at the at the Karlsruhe School of Art, but followed his teacher Spannagel to Berlin in the same year. Berlin. Here he worked from 1928-1945 as a teacher - appointed professor in 1931 - at the Berlin Tischler-Schule, the later Bauschule für Raumgestaltung. The furniture he created in Berlin became internationally known through many exhibitions and lectures. nationally known and influential. His furniture creations ushered in a new era in German and a new era in German and European furniture design. At the world exhibition in Paris 1937 Prof. Nothelfer was awarded the Golden Medal for his work in the furniture sector. for his work in the furniture sector. A first summary and balance of his work on furniture is given in his standard work 1942 published standard work "Das Sitzmöbel", the first compendium of its kind in the world. world. In 1950 he published his second work "Furniture". Both books and a series of brochures were published by Verlag Otto Maier, Ravensburg. Karl Nothelfer continued to work intensively on the design of seating furniture in the years after 1945. In 1950 he succeeded in the important invention of the two-legged skid-base chair, which has been orthopedically - anatomically tested thousands of times - has become accepted all over the world today. Even the most distinguished American furniture companies such as Miller or Knoll-International use the skid as the main theme for desks and chairs. At the same time, N. had a groundbreaking in the redesign of German school furniture and seating for industry. industry. He succeeded in adapting his furniture forms, which originated in wood and handicraft, to the modern technical modern technical possibilities of the industry. He thus became the great refor- of schoolroom furnishings. The architect Nothelfer thinks about himself, that he made his main contribution in the field of seating furniture, although this was not was not really his profession. After the war, Prof. Nothelfer, like so many others, had to start all over again. He settled settled in his home town of Lake Constance in Hödingen in 1945 as a freelance architect and was and was involved in all areas of construction in the years after the war. As early as 1935, he had given many the example of American prefabricated buildings and recommended serial house and recommended it at a time when no one in Germany was even thinking about mass production. Now he developed he developed several types of mass-produced houses, which were manufactured in Baiersbronn. of which more than 800 houses were built in France alone (types Paris, Provence, Normandie). were built. By presenting his own work, he has here interpreted what the essence of the magazine wanted to be: Building, in order to live in it, in order to live as a human being and humanly in the built. Karl Nothelfer planned his houses furniture ground plan, from the need for living. In 1948 he was appointed honorary senator of the State Building school in Holzminden. Karl Nothelfer did not build much in Singen. The first post-war house was Haus Fahr on the slope of the Hohentwiel (Domäne); the building material came from a demolished log house that a French officer had built for himself on the Schie- nerberg. nerberg. On the airfield Mengen, Nothhelfer built the casino building with the 30 square meter faience painting Ikarus by C. G. Becker. In 1954 he founded a second office with architect Hans Schwingen in Düsseldorf. The box form mid century modern design is supported by a group of heavy chrome circular disk like feet. This sofa has a matching pair of box chairs, fully redone to match, sold separately. Around 1950, the Brooklyn, New York–born Stendig (b. 1924) worked for Raymor, a purveyor of modern china and accessories that is best known for distributing designer Russel Wright’s American Modern line of ceramics. While at Raymor, Stendig focused on the company’s less popular pieces that were made in Italy and Scandinavia, recognizing their potential for the American market. In 1955, he left the company and decided to establish Stendig Co. In 1956, the first Stendig Co. showroom opened in Manhattan. A year later, during a trip to Zurich, Stendig came across a Bauhaus–inspired furniture store featuring pieces by Swiss designers Kurt Thut, Hans Eichenberger and Robert Haussmann, the store’s co-owner. Following a meeting with Haussmann, Stendig became the retailer’s exclusive U.S. distributor. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, Stendig Co. imported and sold furniture...

First Edition P32 Lounge Set by Borsani, Early Triangulated Form Wire Base, 1956
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Stunning, rare early first edition 1956 "32" series lounge set by Italian designer Osvaldo Borsani for 'Tecno', Italy. This set comprises a pair of first edition 'P32' lounge and the extremely rare and rrarely seen matching first edition three seat 'D32' sofa. This early set also still retain their original solid brass 'Tecno' manufacturer's roundels (, the P'32' lounge chairs still retain their early first edition solid brass knurled spring adjusters. See image 5. A rare opportunity to acquire a complete first edition series '32' lounge set. The first edition of this series is disinguished by its elegant triangulated wire rod base which gives the base a sculptural quality that was somewhat lost in the second ediiton where the triangulated wire base was replaced by a more utilitarian and simplified three prong steel base of a heavier guage to replace the strength lost by the removal of the triangulation. This simplification of the second edition reduced overall production costs but in my opinon lost some of the visual appeal of the first edition chairs. This set have had their upholstery completely restored with new high quality Pantera foam and new rubber support webbing by the original italian manufacturer PIRELLI. The chairs and sofa have been finished in lovely high quality ' A perfect flower' fabric by italian textile manufacturer DEDAR. 'A perfect flower' by DEDAR has a hard-wearing wool texture poised between the perfect regularity of its warp and weft weaving and the natural exuberance of ondé yarn which ripples its surface. The black enamel finish on the chair bases and sofa legs have been left in their original condition to maintain some visual original period authenticity to this rare early set, these could easily be repainted should the buyer wish to do so. We have also left the brass hardware in its original patina for the same reason but these could also be polished. The 'P32' lounge chairs was presented in 'Tecno' manufacturer catalogs as a "swivel armchair with automatic repositioning mechanism, metal frame , adjustable back and spring, foam rubber padding and interchangeable covers available in a broad range of colors" This ingenious automatic repositioning mechanism means that you when sat in the seat you can swivel the chair through any angle between 0- 360 degrees for ease of conversation etc however when you stand up the seat will automatically return to its original position in order to "maintain order in the room". Dimensions: Lounge chairs:- 84 cm wide x 75 cm deep x 80 cm high, seating height 40 cm 33.1" wide x 29.5" deep x 31.5" high, seating height 15.7" Sofa:- 190 cm wide x 75 cm deep x 80 cm high, seating height 40 cm 74.8" wide x 29.5" deep x 31.5" high, seating height 15.7" LITERATURE: The 'P32' lounge chairs are published in :- 'Osvaldo Borsani', Gramigna and Irace, pg. 278-279 Domus, issue number 342, May 1958, , page 15 The 'D32' sofa is published in:- RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO ,issue number 56, 1959 (original full page Tecno advert ) RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO, issue number 115,1964 page 27...
