“Bird of Paradise” Vintage Leather Chair by Pieter van Velzen for Leolux

About the Item

Produced by Dutch manufacturer Leolux in the early 2000s, the "Bird of Paradise" — or "Paradijsvogel" — armchair was designed by Pieter van Velzen around the concept of navigating paradise like a bird. The chair's form is defined by a triangular leather cover stretched between three points of a steel frame, creating a sharp apex at the back. A separate triangular headrest slides into position at the top of the backrest. The low, wide leather seat extends outward from the frame, and the chair rests on a four-point star metal base. The leather is a warm rust-cognac tone throughout. Van Velzen's design for Leolux reflects the sculptural ambition of Dutch furniture design during the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period when manufacturers like Leolux consistently pushed beyond conventional upholstery forms. The detachable cover system — where leather is held by the geometry of the frame rather than traditional upholstery methods — speaks to an engineering-forward approach to seating. The chair shows visible wear, surface scuffing, staining, and a split seam consistent with age and use.
