Brazilian Jangada Rosewood & Leather Sling Chair with Ottoman by Jean Gillon

About the Item

This Jean Gillon Jangada armchair and ottoman were completely disassembled and each piece of rosewood was stripped, sanded and refinished in multiple coats of hand-buffed finishing oil. Every dowel was also oiled and detailed before reassembly. Both frames are now rock solid and special care was given to each joint to ensure rigidity. The original netting was inspected and brushed clean. Of course, all of this was in addition to the new leather upholstery. Our team decided to go with a slightly under-stuffed and minimalist look to the cushions to allow more visibility to the stunning rosewood frame. The leather has a slightly rustic, marbled caramel earth tone that compliments the netting and frame. The button tufting pattern we chose adds a subtle tailored look in accordance to the overall atmosphere of this rare and iconic chair. Jean Gillon, Jangada Armchair, rosewood, nylon rope, leather, Brazil, 1968. This robust and hefty armchair is designed by Jean Gillon. The originality of this Jangada Armchair comes from the concept of the body being captured by the piece of furniture, which is constructed with a nylon mesh that resembles a fishing net. These details, the mesh but also the horizontal elements on top of the armrests result in a machine-like strong object. The legs are all thick and sturdy and tapered towards the end. On various places, the vertical elements are connected with horizontal slats. Jean Gillon (1919-2007) was borne in Romania where he studied at the School of Fine Arts and Architecture. In 1956 he emigrated to Brazil where he established himself as an interior architect, industrial designer, and artist. In 1961 he founded the Cidam Furniture Factory. Here he completed his lines of furniture and decoration objects. From 1964 he became well known in the international market. Literature: – Móvel. Brasileiro Moderno. Tulip Group Lounge Chairs in Rosewood by K M Wilkins for G-Plan of England
By Percival Lafer, G Plan Furniture, Thonet, Charles and Ray Eames
Located in Chattanooga, TN
Matching sofa also available and sold separately (see last pic). This incredible set was purchased new in Glasgow, Scotland in 1970. We acquired from the original owners who kept them in pristine condition. Designed by K.M. Wilkins for G-Plan of England, this line is appropriately named the "Tulip Group". Wilkins also designed the the well known Housemaster Chair, often misattributed to Ib Kofod Larsen. The "Tulip" design is demonstrated by the rosewood panels which are molded into curves that mimic a blossoming flower. Offered almost exclusively in teak, this rosewood set is truly a rare find. The rich, amber-red panels are perfectly complimented by the chrome hardware and velvet fabric. The luxuriously soft velvet is in amazing condition. The color is difficult to describe, but in our opinion, it's a cross between olive-green and taupe-brown. Of course the refraction of light on velvet can magnify or minimize the tones and highlights depending on the angle and environment. Both chairs hover on their original Magnum Orbit chrome...

Brazilian Modern “Jangada” Armchair & Stool in Hardwood & Leather, Jean Gillon
By Jean Gillon
Located in New York, NY
Available today, this Brazilian Modern “Jangada” lounge chair with stool in hardwood & leather by Jean Gillon designed in the 1960s is absolutely gorgeous! The chair's name, "Jangada," was named after the small rustic fishing boats used by fishermen along the northern coast of Brazil. The “purplish” tone of the wood chair contrasts nicely with the iconic caramel leather upholstery, adding to its luxurious and elegant appearance. The upholstery took three months to make and was done by some of the best upholsters in Rio de Janeiro following Gillon’s upholstery methodology (as is showcased in the vintage publications attached). Remains of the manufacturing seal can be seen in the wood base. The nets are new. Owning a "Jangada '' lounge chair is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This chair is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design. Beyond its physical beauty and unique design, the "Jangada" lounge chair also embodies the Brazilian spirit, an specific aspect of Brazilian Modernism that can be seen in other brazilian icons like Sergio Rodrigues, the Tres Pies chair of Joaquim Tenreiro or the Canoa sofa of Liceu de Artes e Oficios. The gorgeous set is showcased in our showroom next to a Novo Rumo rosewood credenza, a bar cart designed by Geraldo de Barros and the convo looks nothing less than spectacular Size: H32.5, W36, D41.5, SH15.5 (in) H82.5, W91.4, D105.4, SH39.4 (cm) Jean Gillon is a Brazilian furniture designer born in Romania in 1919.
