Rare and substantial pair of Brazilian modern lounge chairs produced by Fátima Arquitetura e Interiores, Brazil, circa 1960s. Executed in richly figured solid rosewood, these lounge chairs exemplify the bold materiality and sculptural presence associated with Brazilian modern design of the period. The frames are constructed from exceptionally thick, dense cuts of solid rosewood, with deeply expressive grain patterns that move across each surface with striking contrast and natural drama. The weight and scale of the construction are immediately apparent, these are notably heavier and more substantial than comparable designs, including chairs by Sergio Rodrigues such as the “Franco,” to which they bear stylistic resemblance. The design of these sizable club chairs are defined by its architectural clarity: broad horizontal rails, exposed joinery, and cylindrical vertical supports secured with visible dowel detailing. This honest, almost structural expression of the frame reflects the Brazilian emphasis on craftsmanship, material integrity, and tactile presence. The rosewood frames have been professionally refinished and present beautifully, highlighting the depth and movement of the grain. The upholstery is later and may be replaced to suit the next owner’s preferences. A powerful and uncommon seating group that works effortlessly within Brazilian Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Brutalist, or Contemporary interiors, and pairs especially well with other South American masters including Sergio Rodrigues, Joaquim Tenreiro, and Percival Lafer.
