European Cabinetmaker Armchairs with Curved Arms, Europe, 1930s

About the Item

This elegant pair of armchairs is an interesting bridge between the 20th century’s earlier artistic movements, like Art Deco, and the modernist movement that was about to shape most of Europe’s furniture design for the coming decades. Inspired by the conspicuous curves of Art Deco furniture from the beginning of the 20th century, these chairs illustrate the perfect alliance of geometry and function combined with the world renowned craftsmanship and Material choices of Modernism. Since these chairs carry design elements from Art Deco as well as early mid-century modernism, they have a unique and immediately recognizable look. Dominated by the heavily curved arms, the chairs have beautiful, almost sculptural structures that evoke the high-end craftsmanship of both design movements. The solid wooden frame mixes straight and curved lines masterfully, with a flowing back structure and a more functionalist front with straight lines. These shapes’ sharp contrast is blended by the upholstered seat and back cushions. The short legs allow both the arms and the thick seat cushions to stand out while providing ample support. Strengthening the transition into a more minimalistic modern aesthetic even further, these chairs don’t have any embellishment. High level craftsmanship and attention to detail were of optimum importance for the maker of these chairs, evidenced by the seamless joinery and impeccable woodworking. The design brings together the best of two style movements, resulting in a look that is, and will remain timeless. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use.
