Gerard Vollenbrock Lounge Chair for Gelderland, 1985
About the Item
Designed by Gerard Vollenbrock for Gelderland in 1985, this lounge chair pairs a white enameled tubular metal frame with deep pink upholstery in original condition. The frame is composed of angular, geometric lines — squared arm supports with small padded rests, open side profiles, and gently curved rear legs — giving the structure a graphic, architectural quality characteristic of Dutch design in the 1980s. Seat and back cushions are generously proportioned, with upholstery wrapping cleanly to meet the frame at the armrests.
Gelderland, a long-established Dutch furniture manufacturer, produced work by a range of designers across the postwar decades. Vollenbrock's design for the label reflects the broader Postmodern sensibility that shaped Dutch furniture production in the mid-1980s — bold color, geometric structure, and a departure from the organic forms of earlier decades.
The chair is in original condition with some visible wear on frame, consistent with its age and use.
