One of three rare Easy Chairs by Illum Wikkelsoe for Michael Laursen, Denmark, 1959. Illum Wikkelsø was a very typical Scandinavian furniture designer in Denmark, who was guided by the natural, organic design, which adapts to the human sitting position and is also stable and durable. He was particularly influenced by designer countrymen such as Peter Hvidt and Jacob Kjaer. He worked closely with well-known Danish furniture manufacturers such as Soren Willadsen, Holgar Christiansen and Komfort. His rocking chair and his high-back model V11 with its pyramid-shaped rosewood legs, a design that reflected in the diagonals of the backrest and armrests, was upholstered in brown leather and became famous. Illum Wikkelsø developed his style from his craftsmanship and thus belonged entirely to the generation of Danish designers in the middle of the 20th century. The simple yet elegant style of his seating furniture is reminiscent of the classic forms of Kaare Klint and the more expressionist designs of Arne Jacobsen. Like his great designer colleagues, he made the Danish furniture design of the 1950s and 60s famous throughout the world. Kristian Illum Wikkelsø was born on 15 July 1919 in Denmark. As a teenager he first did a carpenter apprenticeship before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen starting 1941. He then worked first with the Danish fine cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær, as well as for architects, and from 1954 he set up his own workshop near Aarhus in Jutland. There he was also buried after his death in 1999.
