About the Item

Marvelous vintage Henredon Neoclassic Revival animal print fabric and off white and gilt frame large scale fireside chairs, a pair. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. There is some wear to fabric on the top of the back of 1 chair and we reglued the seam of the wood on one arm at seat level. Fabric has faded but is more so on the backs however, in our opinion, looks purposeful. They have been professionally shampooed. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. Circa, Late 20th Century. My “animal instincts” are telling me that you NEED this pair of chairs!! This is a GORGEOUS pair of Henredon Neoclassic Revival fireside chairs wearing an incredible animal print fabric on the seat and back cushions and bolster pillows. They are large scale in size with super deep seats. Remember Edith Ann in the long running 60’s comedy show “Laugh In?” Well, to refresh your memory, she sat in that HUGE rocking chair telling funny stories as she rocked back & forth! Well, these chairs may not rock but they feel ALMOST as large as her chair from that show! Haha… not really, but they are definitely overscale and SUPER comfortable!! The frames and arms are fluted, and they have an all over purposeful aged & distressed patina and a bit of a Roman feel with the circle pattern and laurel leaf detail on the apron all around the chair. The front legs are turned and fluted and tapered and the back legs extend from the sleigh style upholstered back frame of the chair and have an outward flair. The polyfil in the bolster pillow is a bit displaced and they would do well refilled but can be used as they are if you choose. This pair of chairs would be wonderful facing the fireplace in the family room, in the corner of your bedroom, across from the sofa in your living room, or in the study with a wonderful accent table in between. Henredon was founded in 1945 by four Drexel Heritage executives; T. Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards, Donnell VanOppen, and Sterling Collet. The name Henredon is a combination of their names. These four men were determined to build furniture of custom quality and their original offering was only three chests. It has since blossomed into hundreds of designs still in keeping with their goal. Through the years they have engaged well known designers to create their unique and fine furniture. They currently are part of the company Furniture Brands, Inc. but still embracing their long-standing tradition of fine furniture craftsmanship and reputation for timeless elegance. Henredon

Founded in 1945, Henredon is one of the more recently minted of the top-tier North Carolina furniture makers. Among collectors, Henredon is admired both for its sleek, sexy furniture of the 1970s and for its partnerships with noted designers, a program that started in the 1950s with decorating icon Dorothy Draper and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

From the start, Henredon — the brand name is a portmanteau term, derived from the first names or initials of three of the company’s founders — has been best known for its vintage case pieces, such as cabinets, dressers, armoires and credenzas. Though not on the cutting edge stylistically, the company’s production has always kept pace with contemporary tastes. In 1953, Henredon began a collaboration with Dorothy Draper, famed for bravura interior design commissions such as the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco and the Greenbrier resort in West Virginia. Her taste for bold, modernized historical style is reflected in the incised baroque medallions of her España line and the geometric motif of her Viennese furnishings group.

In 1955, Henredon launched the Taliesin Ensemble by Wright, named after the architect’s houses in Wisconsin and Arizona. The pieces are recognizable by their angular shapes a dentil motif on their edges. In those years, Henredon had a cross-licensing agreement with the Heritage furniture company, and Draper and Wright furniture is usually labeled Heritage-Henredon.

In later decades, Henredon produced collections for such designers as Ralph Lauren and Laura Ashley. The company took a stylish turn in the 1970s, fabricating new and unusual forms like mirrored room dividers and console tables with rounded corners and burl-wood veneers. Such pieces are priced in the $3,000 to $4,000 range, as are chests of drawers by Draper. Wright furniture tends toward the higher end, priced around $7,000. As you will see on 1stDibs, Henredon was an aesthetically diverse maker, but its furniture commands attention and makes a statement in any eclectic decor.
