Marcel Breuer, Long Chair, Birch Plywood, Isokon Furniture Ltd, Designed 1935

About the Item

Marcel Breuer (1902 - 1981), Long Chair, designed 1935-1936, in laminated birch plywood This is an early example of the model produced by Isokon Furniture Company Ltd, London. Later versions are covered, but the early editions were completely plywood. Some minor scratches, particularly on the feet reverse, and signs of wear. Seat appears in excellent condition. Evidence of one repair - a professional restoration of the top curve of the left leg, with coloration of the surrounding area on the top and reverse. Otherwise good condition, consistent with usage and age. Note: The Isokon Furniture Company was co-founded by Jack Pritchard in 1935 to promote modern furniture design within the United Kingdom. A follower and devotee of the design principles and aesthetics of the Bauhaus, Pritchard invited Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, to relocate to London in 1934, with Marcel Breuer following shortly thereafter in 1935. An employee of the Venesta Plywood Company, Pritchard envisioned using this material in modern furniture designs. This reclining lounge chair designed by Breuer was the first design for the firm. The initial design was based on a previous aluminium chair design and the transition of material from metal to wood proved difficult, forcing Breuer to make multiple modifications to the design to suit the new material and later versions include an upholstered cushion to cover the seat. The model is held within permanent collections internationally, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
