Monumental Lounge Chairs Attributed to Frascaroli & T. Agnoli, Italy 1960

About the Item

Amazing pair of monumental yet sculptural form lounge chairs that we have strongly attributed to the Italian architects Adelmo Rascaroli and Tito Agnoli who collaborated on designing a series of lounge chairs for the company C.Nova Camerani, Italy, circa 1960-1963. A few of their designs for C.Nova Camerani were featured in the 1963, issue number 105, of the high profile Italian design journal 'Revista Dell Arredamento.' These designs feature common details to these chairs, a very similar monumental seating form complete with the very unusual and delicate use of slim profile, curved hardwood strips for the supporting feet which creates a tension between the monumental luxurious form of the seat and the very delicate yet sturdy supporting hardwood feet. The same 'rivista dell arredamento' article also states that the designs illustrated were only a few of those that Frascaroli and Agnoli designed in this series of lounge chairs. This leads to me to have further confidence in my attribution. I have only seen this wonderful yet rare design once before, a renovated pair, missing the original curved armrest pads was sold at the Galerie Glustin in Paris who attributed this design to Sartori but unfortunately they had no documentation to support this assertion. (Please see image number 8) Our chairs have been completely renovated including new foam, support webbing and new De Ploeg 'everest' fabric, an organic yarn twine developed by De Ploeg that consists of a wool, linen and cotton mix. A very subtle and organic play of colors is created due to the fact that the different natural materials interact with the dye slightly differently. We have kept a series of photos of these chairs in their original green velour both prior to reupholstery and during the stripping and restoration process which we can show to interested clients for future provenance and proof of originality. Wear consistent with age and use. The Upholstery has been completely renovated including new foam, new support webbing and new De Ploeg 'Everest' fabric. The original feet are in nice unrestored condition and are in good structural order.
