Pair of "Conseta" Lounge Chairs by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller, Germany 1960s

About the Item

Friedrich-W. Möller was a cabinetmaker before turning to furniture design. After receiving his Master Craftsman Diploma, he trained in furniture design and interior decoration. In 1963 he founded his own company and, within a short span of time, designed the modern classic 'Conseta' - which manufacturer COR has kept in production ever since. The mid-century modern movement was more than a design trend - it was a new design ethos that emerged in a world recovering from war, seeking simplicity, functionality, and a break from the past's ornate styles. The movement was influenced by the International and Bauhaus movements, embracing a philosophy that good design should be accessible to all. This style was characterized by its sleek lines and functional design, as these 'Conseta' chairs demonstrate. The subtly angular structure features straight and soft edges, combining traditional craftsmanship and the architectural know-how of mid-century furniture designers. While the refined linearity defines the overall aesthetic, functionality was clearly an important aspect of the design concept. Due to the well-executed proportions and fully upholstered bodies, this pair of chairs offers great comfort. The lines are crisp and elegant, with the ergonomic seats and backrests aiding stability and relaxation. The premium upholstery complements the metal legs by creating an apparent contrast, both in colour and texture. Elements of the Bauhaus style also come through in these chairs. The phrase ‘form follows function’ became one of the fundamental ideas of Bauhaus; it means that in creating a design, the form should be guided by the function of the piece. The utility should come first and excessive ornamentation was to be avoided. Master cabinetmakers were highly aware of body proportions, prioritizing comfort just as much as the visual qualities. The muted colours and gentle designs make mid-century furniture - like this pair of chairs - an ideal addition to contemporary living spaces. Condition: In good vintage condition.
