Francis Jourdain, pair of armchairs, rush, stained wood, France, ca. 1925 Designed by the French painter and cabinetmaker Francis Jourdain (1876–1958), these elegant chairs possess a subtle provincial charm, embodying a quiet sophistication that highlights the designer’s appreciation for craftsmanship, simplicity, and honest materials. The architectural wooden frames are composed of clean lines and balanced proportion. Traditionally, with these type of rustic chairs, the fiber threads are woven, creating braided ropes that are then arranged alongside or upon each other. The interplay between the dark, structured frame and the warm tone of the geometrically layered, woven rush creates a harmonious contrast, reinforcing the chairs’ understated elegance.
