Mies van der Rohe was an early mentor and tutor to Florence Knoll. With this connection van der Rohe granted Florence and Knoll, Inc. the rights to manufacture his entire collection of furniture in 1945. Knoll’s 1947 version of the Barcelona Chair was chrome-plated with leather cushions, which were tufted on one side and flat on the other. Stuffed with dense industrial foam, these cushions had distinctive thick welted piping. Mies’ signature was added to the back right of the Barcelona Chair in the mid-1990s, helping differentiate it from copycats and authenticate it as an Original Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Design.
