Pair of Lella and Massimo Vignelli Saratoga Chairs, 1960s

About the Item

Pair of Saratoga chairs designed by Lella and Massimo Vignelli for Poltronova, featuring the distinctive wraparound frame construction that defines the design. Plywood cases create continuous shells that enclose the seating area, with armrests completing the sculptural form. The architectural structure provides both the frame and the visual identity of the chair. Cases have been professionally refinished in matte black lacquer, preserving the original forms. New brown leather cushions provide seat and back support, with the warm leather tones contrasting against the black lacquer frames. The leather softens the angular geometry of the plywood shells. The Saratoga chair, designed in 1964, represents the Vignellis' approach to furniture as sculptural objects with bold, unified forms. The wraparound case construction eliminates traditional legs and separate components in favor of a single molded element. Works well as a pair of lounge chairs or separated for use in different areas. Black and brown color combination suits mid-century modern, contemporary, or minimalist interiors.
