Pastoe FM 08 Swivel Bucket Chair by Cees Braakman, 1960s

About the Item

Designed by Cees Braakman for Pastoe in the 1960s, the FM 08 is a swivel bucket chair with a deeply sculpted upholstered shell and a four-point star metal base. The shell form is wide and enveloping, with gently flared upper edges framing a separate seat cushion. The base was refinished in black and fitted with replacement wenge footcaps, as the originals had been lost. Braakman's work for Pastoe during the postwar decades helped define Dutch Mid-Century furniture design. His FM series chairs were among the more architecturally resolved bucket chair designs of the period, balancing a sculptural shell profile with a functional swivel base suited to the forward-looking interiors of the era. Pastoe, founded in Utrecht in 1913, became one of the most respected Dutch furniture manufacturers of the 20th century, producing work for Braakman and other leading designers across several decades. The chair retains its original upholstery, which shows fading and wear consistent with age and use. The frame was professionally refinished.
