About the Item

Ilmari Tapiovaara for Hienoteräs, 'Maija the Bee' floor lamp, coated metal, brass, cane, Finland, 1955 The line of ‘Maija’ lights was designed by Ilmari Tapiovaara in 1955. He was inspired by the children’s book ‘Maya the Bee’, in particular the hive with its different layers. The result is the ‘Maija’ lamp with the reclining discs showing the light is from a shimmering honeycomb. He developed several varieties and this particular piece features brass feet, which is a rare variety. Ilmari Tapiovaara (1914-1999) was one of the most important Finnish interior architects and designers of his generation. He significantly shaped the international design of the 20th Century. He had a focus on purity in line and colour – simplicity without sterility. Respect for craft traditions but a constant focus on new technological experiments. He was focusing on mass production ‘to give better to more’ and this led him to have interest in for example chromium plated tubular steel such as in the Kiki chair that had won the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale of 1960. Iversen, armchair, Niger leather, patinated oak, Denmark, 1930s Early and rare lounge chair by Acton Bjørn in a beautiful cognac colored Niger leather with patinated oak armrest. Warm and inviting piece with a sculptural backrest and beautiful detailing on the oak wooden armrests. The original leather has a beautiful patina, giving the appearance of the chair extra depth. Acton Bjørn (1910-1992) was a Danish designer and architect who was educated at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. He worked in Copenhagen for the majority of his career and led the Acton Bjørn studio between 1966 and 1990. Measurements of the chair: 82.5 x 76 x 86cm (seat height: 44cm).
