About the Item

Giulio Alchini, pair of easy chairs, elm, reupholstered in Dedar 'Belsuede' chenille, Italy, 1950s These extremely rare armchairs are designed by the Italian artist Giulio Alchini. A streamlined design that stems from the designer's interest in the forms and styles of architecture. The skeleton-based construction consists of a strict and linear composition of wooden elements assembled by refined wood joints and technique. By means of the subtle, yet significant, rotation of the 90-degree angle of the seat frames, the rear legs stand in opposite direction. This distinctive feature is besides its aesthetic appeal highly important for the overall stability of the chair. Furthermore, the design guarantees a qualitative ergonomic experience. The newly reupholstered seat in black chenille is secured to the frame, creating a hammock-like seat that adapts to the body of the sitter. This pair represents Giulio Alchini's expert craftsmanship, knowledge in architectural principles and great eye for detail and material. The chairs are brand-stamped 'AG' on the frame. Born in Italy, Giulio Alchini (1926-1958) is an artist who lived during the post-war years. He had his first experiences with wood in his father's workshop. He attended the 'Scuola d'Arte dei Carmini' where he followed classes in drawing and wooden sculpture from 1945 to 1948. During this period, he encountered Venetian artists among others, Riccardo Schweizer (1925-2004) and Agostino Venturini (1931-2010). Despite his short life of only thirty-two years, Alchini made significant pieces of work resulted from his interest in architecture intertwined with his passion for furniture design. He passed away on March 29, 1958.
