About the Item

A exceptional and truly unique pair of original black leather “Leo” lounge armchairs, designed by Robin Day for Hille, England, circa 1967. This set stands apart from any other known example of the model by virtue of its fully integrated and working stereo audio system — making it one of the most extraordinary pieces of mid-century British design to come to market. Each chair is upholstered in its original black leather with deep button tufting across the seat, back and headrest, and mounted on a polished chrome four-star swivel base. The generous proportions, squared silhouette and sculpted headrest wings are hallmarks of Robin Day’s confident, architecturally-minded approach to seating — a language equally at home in a director’s office or a film set. The audio system, integrated seamlessly into the left armrest of one chair, is the defining feature of this pair. The control panel — finished in brushed aluminium with black anodised fascia — bears German-language controls (EIN / INTERN / EXTERN / TIEFEN / HÖHEN / BALANCE / LAUTSTÄRKE) and the distinctive atomic flower logo of Zentroz, a rare and highly collectible West German electronics brand of the Space Age era. The system drives a pair of Philips oval speakers, each mounted within its own leather-clad pod at the top of the headrest wings, framed in polished chrome. The system remains in full working order. This configuration — bespoke furniture engineering combined with integrated high-fidelity audio — was almost certainly conceived as a prototype or commission for film or television production, consistent with the period’s fascination with technologically equipped “command chairs” as seen in major British productions of the late 1960s. Robin Day (1915–2010) was one of Britain’s foremost industrial and furniture designers, celebrated for his work with Hille from the early 1950s onward. His designs are held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
