About

An early 19th century Regency period black painted and brass mounted desk armchair of Greek revival Klismos form, in the taste of Thomas Hope. English, circa 1810. This black-japanned and cane-seated chair, with Grecian boldly curved legs and gilt-brass paterae, is designed in the French antique fashion popularised by Thomas Hope and Henry Holland, the architect to George, the Prince of Wales. The superbly curved 'Sabre' legs derive from the Greek 'Klismos' chair, an epic timeless design, already popular in circa 400 BC, while the lustrous black japanning evoke the then newly fashionable fascination with Ancient Egypt. Thomas Hope, one of the most extravagant designers of the early 19th century, published a related design with scrolled back and outcurved legs in his book Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807.
