RAR Rocking Chair by Charles & Ray Eames, 1950s

About the Item

This emblematic rocking chair designed by Charles & Ray Eames in the fifties is well known for its powerful form and its indisputable comfort. The RAR (Rocking Armchair Rod Base), made out of polypropylene, aluminium and wood, is really a key work of the Eames couple and the perfect combination of three flagship materials from the design world. The two were born in the United States of America at the beginning of the 20th century and became famous for their industrial and graphic design endeavour but also in fine arts and film. Based in Los Angeles, they wanted their work to mainly aim the creation of comfortable and affordable chairs while continuing to experiment in the other fields mentioned above. Charles Eames was from an architectural background when his wife Ray (née Bernice Alexandra Kaiser) had a painting training. This experience surely influenced their work and creations.
