'Mah Jong' 14-Piece Living Room Set by Kenzo Takada for Roche Bobois, Signed

About the Item

This incredibly large living room set designed by Hans Hopfer and edited in collaboration with Kenzo Takada for Roche Bobois, is called the "Mah Jong" sectional sofa. Included in this set are fourteen (14) pieces in total which include 7 square seat cushions (which also function as large ottomans and can be stacked), 1 panoramic seat cushion, 2 straight seat backs, 1 flip-up seat back, 2 corner seat backs and 1 panoramic seat back. We have several other Mah Jong sets including Missoni fabric sets so you can add to this set and combine to make a larger one if desired. What we love about this particular set is threefold... first it is comprised of only Kenzo Takada specialty fabrics. If you are familiar with Roche Bobois pricing system, specialty fabric elements can cost more than double the plain or simple fabric counterparts. Most sets will incorporate a portion of plain or simple fabric elements but rarely do you see sets like this where every single piece is a home run. And the fabric selection/ curation on this set is simply exquisite. Second, this set is in excellent almost-new condition. Roche Bobois introduced the Kenzo Takada collection in 2017 so this set is less than 5 years old. See below for more condition details. And third, the configuration is absolutely perfect and ideal for so many living spaces. It has three-corner elements and one of them is a Panoramic corner seat. It's great to get one Panoramic corner in a set as it is the ideal spot to stretch out and lounge - if this were my set and I had this at home, that is the spot I would choose most of the time. And the additional 2 corners allows you to wrap this set around a room and create the most cozy of cozy conversation pits. Plus having a flip-top seat back is so great, it brings a little of that Italian Maralunga style into the room. And what people love most about the Mah Jong system is that you can mix and match the cushions and seat backs to make any style arrangement you wish, and create a customized room which you can change as frequently as your heart desires... you can create small and large sofas, loveseats, lounge chairs and ottomans using the various fabrics, cushions and seat backs. Ideal for all kinds of uses... consider this set for a large screening room, den or living room, bedroom seating, entertainment room, commercial uses such as a hotel or boutique lounge, you can even spread the pieces around the house and put some in a large walk-in closet / dressing room, kids room, classroom or training room, and for those limited on space in an apartment - you can stack the cushions and then spread them out when you have company. A great way to make the most of space by keeping versatile with this Roche Bobois Mah Jong seating system. Originally designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer the 'Mah Jong' seating system is as iconic today as it was then. Here is what Roche Bobois has to say about this design and the designer: Painter, sculptor, designer... Hans Hopfer designed sofas that are, for many, the indisputable “signature” of Roche Bobois’ collections. In the 1970s, Hopfer’s innovative and informal approach to comfort had a profound influence on the way people furnished and arranged their living space. In 1971, he created the Mah Jong, a sofa based on the total freedom of function and form. Starting with three basic elements that can be combined or stacked, the Mah Jong allows limitless options of composition. It can be an armchair, sofa, lounge chair or bed; a space in which to rest, to play or to lounge. It encourages experimentation and breaks the rules of formal living, reflecting the nonconformist era in which it was born. Avant-garde when first created, iconic today, and “dressed” by Missoni Home, Kenzo Takada and Jean Paul Gaultier, this “free form” modular seating is the reference point for fully modular and creative design. This large Mah Jong sectional sofa set by Hans Hopfer for Kenzo Takada and Roche Bobois would work great in a Post-Modern, Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Use this set to create sofa sections, settee sections, easy chair sections, ottomans and chaises, even a large daybed or room sized night-bed using the different elements to customize a seating arrangement that best suits your room. • Roche Bobois Early Production Mah Jong Elements, Pair, Signed, 1970s
    By Roche Bobois, Hans Hopfer
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This beautiful pair of Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements by Hans Hopfer are from the earlier years of the design in the 1970s, before they created the Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier collaborations where they gained a new look. This pair of Mah Jong elements are without a seat back, so they are ideal as a pair of large floor cushions or stacked on top of another as a large ottoman. At home, we have another pair of these that we use for our dogs as a large dog bed which we humans also use. When we want more floor space we can stack them and push them against the wall. When we have guests and need more seating in the living room we pull them over and stack next to a coffee table. But most of the time it is side by side for the dogs to use and when us humans need a quick NAP - we use it as a daybed underneath a skylight or can lay with the dogs for a quick cuddle. This pair of Mah Jong sectional sofa elements was reupholstered with new fabric over the original interior foam, original bottom lining and labels. The visible fabric is brand new and is in mint condition. Everything else was cleaned, but is original. So it’s the best of both worlds - for those who want a clean, new fabric but also an early production year example of a Classic design. Photos of another pair that we have, in its original fabric are in the photos of this listing. This pair of early production Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, transitional, classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. This monumentally sized modular 'Camaleonda' sectional living room set (fourteen pieces in total) by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia, each section signed with labels as can be seen in the photos. This set has been previously professionally reupholstered with only light use and in very good condition. • Paul Frankl 'Speed' Art Deco Living Room Suite in Black Leather, circa 1930s
    By Paul Frankl
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This incredible Paul Frankl attributed 'Speed' full living room suite is comprised of a three-seat sofa, a 2-seat sofa, armchair and ottoman. The 3-seat sofa and armchair are original 1930s production based on the interior construction details and visible age. The 2-seat sofa and ottoman were created later in the 1980s to match the set and everything was then reupholstered to a thick quality black leather. I personally love this set - the wide arms are perfect for placing a glass of Scotch and an ashtray to enjoy a nice cigar. The deep black color and matching black block feet provide ample masculine style while the shape and silhouette provide a refined and classy vibe. The leather is thick and quality, also smooth and soft to the touch. The collector who acquired this sofa and armchair, purportedly in the 1980s, stated he found what he believed to be a Frankl Galleries (Paul Frankl's 1930s showroom) original example of the Speed sofa...
