19th Century English Gothic Oak Hall Seat
About the Item
An Unusual 19th Century English Gothic Revival Oak Hall Seat or Small Bench.
This unusual bench is clearly related to the ecclesiastical furniture designed by the likes of A. W. N. Pugin in the mid to late 19th century and is, in essence, a smaller version of a church pew. With its deep panelled features to the front and back of the back support, and its gothic tracery carving around the entire top surface and below the seat, this is a brilliant example of the art of the carver. The carving is obviously the work of a highly talented furniture maker. The timber used throughout is of lovely figure and golden colour.
A very interesting, sculptural and unusual piece of gothic revivalism.
