About the Item

This is an old side chair made in Japan. It was made during the Meiji period (1860s-1900s) and is made of cedar wood. The trapezoidal shape is characteristic of this piece, and its primitive design, which is stripped down to the bare essentials, is truly graceful and gives off a strong sense of presence. There are no decorative elements at all, but rather the bare wood and traces of handcraftsmanship. The scratches and changes in coloration on the surface quietly show that the piece has been carefully handled over the years. Originally used as a seat, it looks like a piece of sculpture. With its moderate height and size, it can be used as a side table or display stand in a wide range of modern spaces. It is simple yet powerful, and the depth nurtured by the passage of time is reflected in its beauty. The spirit of “wabi sabi,” or the Japanese aesthetic of “quiet and quiet,” that dwells with the passage of time, lives on in this piece of furniture.
