About the Item

FINE PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE PAINTED ANTIQUE SIDE CHAIRS France, Third Quarter of the 19th Century Item # 502ZYL20P Crafted during the later portion of the 19th century, probably around 1860-80, these crisply detailed and carved chairs exhibit outstanding attention to detail throughout. Characterized not only by finely carved frames, the chairs are mounted with intricate brass embellishments - flanking the crest are a pair of brass draped acanthus pyramidical finials, the fluted stiles are inset with brass stop-fluting over ovular cast rosettes above the curve of the seat; the front and facing corners of the apron all feature sharp cast brass rosettes over highly detailed legs with inset brass stop-fluting and terminating over a brass ringed toe. The legs are particularly fine, each carved around the uppermost portion to appear as a flaming torchiere. Along the center of both aprons is a swag carving with scattered foliage. With a warm and worn surface, both chairs retain early gray-teal painted surface over a lower layer of black paint, both significantly and naturally worn over time to result in the current very charming presentation. For anyone passionate about the Louis XVI form, this pair is a statement that add depth to any setting. Measurements: 20 3/4" D x 20 1/4" W x 36 9/16" H; approximately 19" H to top of curved seat Condition Report: Three back feet missing brass rings. Upholstery must be changed. Heavily worn painted surface with flaking, wear to feet and all edges. Very sturdy and strong with only minor and quite typical joint wiggle.
