Queen Anne Period Walnut Chair Cabriole Legs and Stretchers, English, circa 1700
This is a classic English walnut chair from the Queen Anne period with a beautiful mellow color and dating to circa 1700-1710. This is a very good example of this classic antique design with great character. It has a jointed and pegged construction. The design and shape of this chair is excellent. It has a hand carved vase splat of a typical thin width with a shaped top rail, all characteristic of the period. The side rails are carved rounded and rake backwards giving a distinctive curve to the side view all the way down to the base of the rear legs. The high cabriole front legs have shaped ear pieces to the top sides and the legs curve down to form pad feet. The legs are connected by a cross stretcher that has turned and shaped sections. We note that each leg is made in two vertical pieces. The chair has a drop in seat with an old tapestry cover. This could easily be re-upholstered using a fabric of choice if required. Condition: The overall condition is Fair to good and what one would expect of a chair that has been used for well over 300 years. It is structurally sound and the stretchers make it strong and usable. It has some old repairs to the legs and side rails and shows signs of some old worm holes in places as is often the case with Walnut. That said this chair has a lovely glorious mellow color only obtained by successive generations of use and polishing.
