Rococo Revival Pair of Carved Walnut Antique Side Chairs, 19th Century

About the Item

Exquisitely carved and crafted during the Rococo Revival period, a reinterpretation of the original Louis XV designs of 100 years prior with what, at the time, was a modern twist. The crest rail is an intricate display of rocaille and floral motifs, the crisp and precise carvings highlighted with a touch of gilding over the fine tight grains of the exposed walnut. The frames are handsomely molded throughout, the stile continuing from the crest through the toes of the rear feet in a single piece of wood. The seats are stuffed over the frame with a neat edging of brass tacking lining the apron. The legs are simply gorgeous, each with complex floral embellishments at the knee and flowing down into the scrolled French toes. These are some of the finest chairs of this form from the period, each finished with an outstanding level of skill and attention to detail. While certainly crafted at the same time, each exhibits it's own unique characteristics - slight differences in the shape of the scratch beading, slightly differing twists of floral carvings, minor variations that show that the craftsman was working with his eye and not with a perfect pattern. These will certainly be a cherished part of your home and collection for a lifetime. Measurements: 25" W x 23" D x 39 1/4" H; 18" H to seat. Condition report: Upholstery in excellent condition with only minor spots of discoloration. Chips to carvings. Light wear along edges of the apron, legs and feet. One leg restored (image available upon request). Sturdy and strong. Overall very fine condition. We have many additional images available upon request.
