Alessandro Becchi, Anfibio Sofa, Giovannetti, Italy, 1970s

About the Item

Alessandro Becchi Anfibio sofa bed by Giovannetti Collezioni, Italy, 1970s. Designed in 1970 by Florence-born Alessandro Becchi, the Anfibio is one of the most iconic convertible designs of the 20th century. Named for its amphibious nature, it transforms effortlessly from sofa to fully flat bed, revealing a built-in sheepskin-lined mattress — without any rigid mechanism. The design won the prestigious Compasso d'Oro in 1972. That same year Becchi was invited to the landmark exhibition "Italy: The New Domestic Landscape" at MoMA New York. The Anfibio is held in the permanent collections of 13 museums worldwide. Condition consistent with age and use. A rare vintage example of a true design classic.
