About the Item

An exceptional sofa, both for it's form and quality, it is a distinctive and heavily crafted work. Set over bold marlborough front legs, the centermost and back legs all with a soft saber form, the sofa is kidney shaped with a curved back and serpentine front. The laminated crest rail curves backwards in a distinctly Grecian manner, the whole being exquisitely embellished with original gilt bronze mounts of a Cherub sleeping beneath the clouds with a cornucopia on his lap, another playing a harp in a boat drawn by a sea maiden with butterflies resting on the swirling winds rising from the water, the last figure a putto shown with a branch of laurel leaves beside a memorial plaque and a cape draped from his shoulders. Several intricate rosette mounts compliment these along the crest rail over a thick needlepoint and stitched upholstery in excellent condition. The outward curved arms of the sofa are classically embellished with a rosette over a string of laurel leaves springing from a classical urn - the urn is cast with such incredible detail, all of the mounts being of a quality that is uncommon and incredibly striking. This is an absolute treasure of a find for anyone passionate about the highest grade of quality in their collection. In every way a strike point, but also a very comfortable piece, this piece was crafted to last many generations and if well cared for remains young in years. It is an investment grade selection that will certainly bring visual interest and enjoyment to any classical home for years to come. Measurements: 75 1/4" W x appx 34 1/2" D x 37 1/4" H; 16-18" H to seat Condition report: Overall in exceptional condition with mellowed sun-bleached surface, age appropriate wear/scars/abrasions as expected, wear to feet. Veneers with typical cracks from age and shrinking. Some inactive pest damage. Upholstery in excellent condition with a few loose threads. Very sturdy and strong in all joints.
