French Stained Wood Sofa with Cuffed Armrests, France, ca 1940s

About the Item

“The extension of the art of dwelling is the art of living” declared Charlotte Perriand famously, who was convinced of the power of good design. This sofa helps to understand Perriand’s words, as it offers the best of early French mid-century design. The era’s demand for functionality is met with exceptional design and material quality, and while many of the designers and manufacturers were embracing new industrial techniques and mass production, this sofa has an artisanal feel to it. The fabric arm cuffs on the armrests immediately stand out as the most unique element of the design. In line with the modernist design principles, the decorative element is kept subtle, and the lines clean. At the same time, the cuffs also fulfil a functional role, as they support the sitters’ comfort and cosiness. The round and soft shape complements the stained wood structure’s straight lines, and the colours bring out each other’s beauty. The seat, like the cuffs, is very voluminous, which enhances the cosy look. The back is gently bent for maximum comfort, and its stability is ensured by the short, tapered legs in the back. The mismatched legs add more flair to the already unique design. The stained wood has a beautiful pattern and patina that, combined with the upholstery, gives this two-seater sofa a classic look that recalls Jean Royere’s Écusson seating models of the period. Furniture – especially designer seating models – came to resemble sculptures in France during the 20th century. The mid-century’s demand for functionality did not leave creative design behind, instead gave inspiration to designers to combine these elements in unique ways. Condition: In good vintage condition. • Mid-Century Danish "Banana" Sofa Upholstered in Velour, Denmark ca 1940s
    Located in Utrecht, NL
This beautiful Danish three-seater sofa recalls the Art Deco style of the 1930s with the recognizable touch of Danish Modernism. Thanks to its elegantly curved shape, this type of sofa is often referred to as the “banana” style, which not only creates an intimate gathering place but also defines the look of the home: warm, cosy and never goes out of style. Apart from the visual appearance, the exquisite craftsmanship of this sofa echoes Art Deco as well. Over time, Danish Modern design produced in the last century has come to impart a sense of resistance to faddism. Its forms draw users back to the idea of design as intelligent problem-solving rather than vapid styling. Still, many of the well-known Danish architects felt the urge to try their hands at “Nordic Art Deco...
