Huge Circular Sectional Sofa with Figured Rosewood Base by Milo Baughman

About

Rare and fantastic circular sectional sofa by Milo Baughman for Thayer Coggin. The piece consists of the rarely seen three/three-seat radiused sections; one right arm, one left arm, and one armless, and it can be arranged apart punctuated with side tables as shown en situ, or as the more conventional single unit. The sofa also comes with two unusual ottomans/footrests on casters that we've never seen before. These, on their own, make this lounge sofa even more comfortable. The ottomans are also labeled and were an expensive and rare upgrade for the piece. Unlike the half-circle examples that are more prevalent, this one is a huge, virtual full circle. It is raised on a vibrant vertical-grain Rosewood plinth base, which was an special-order option. This is an early production piece as evidenced by the labels which show that the sofa was manufactured by James, Inc. for Thayer Coggin. James Inc. was an upholstery manufacturing company founded and owned by Thayer Coggin that was later absorbed into Thayer Coggin, Inc.. The base has been restored and refinished and shows as new but we have left the worn original upholstery as-is to be replaced by the buyer. All work done with painstaking attention to detail at our in-house workroom. Note- These early James, Inc. pieces are of exceptional quality compared with the later Thayer Coggin sofas, made with doweled Hardwood frames and tied springs. This example is a very heavy, rigid, traditionally made hardwood frame. It is of the highest quality materials and workmanship.

About Milo Baughman (Designer)

Milo Baughman was one of the most agile and adept modern American furniture designers of the late 20th century. A prolific lecturer and writer on the benefits of good design — he taught for years at Brigham Young University — Baughman (whose often-scrambled surname is pronounced BAWF-man) focused almost exclusively on residential furnishings, having a particular talent for lounge chairs, perhaps the most sociable piece of furniture.

Like his fellow adoptive Californians Charles and Ray Eames, Baughman’s furniture has a relaxed and breezy air. Baughman was famously opposed to ostentatious and idiosyncratic designs that were made to excite attention. While many of his chair designs are enlivened by such effects as tufted upholstery, Baughman tended to let his materials carry the aesthetic weight, most often relying on chair and table frames made of sturdy and sleek flat-bar chromed metal, and chairs, tables and cabinets finished with highly-figured wood veneers.

Like his colleagues Karl Springer and the multifarious Pierre Cardin, Baughman’s designs are emblematic of the 1970s: sleek, sure and scintillating. As you will see from the furniture presented on these pages, Milo Baughman’s designs are ably employed as either the heart of a décor or its focal point.
