Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Convertible Daybed Sofa by Wittmann, Austria, 1970

About the Item

A freestanding sofa model 'Constanze' / 'Constance' with black steel and a fabric in a warm cognac / golden / ocher / mustard yellow / orange tone designed by Prof. Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1970. About Prof. Johannes Spalt: Johannes Spalt attended the 'Gewerbeschule' Salzburg and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Clemens Holzmeister from 1949. He founded 'Arbeitsgruppe 4' (engl. 'working group 4') together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and with Otto Leitner which left in 1953. The groupd was named afterwards the '3/4-ler'. In 1969 he ran his own studio in Vienna, in partial cooperation with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973 to 1990 Johannes Spalt was Professor of Interior Design and Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and from 1975 to 1979 also its Rector. In addition to designs and realized buildings, Spalt created numerous furniture designs, for example for Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten. Johannes Spalt organized with Max Kurrent the first Adolf Loos exhibition: 1962 in Paris and 1964 in Vienna in the new museum of the 20th century. In 1965 the first Josef Frank exhibition took place in Vienna.

    Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, 'Constanze' daybed or sofa, black leather, steel, Austria, 1960s This Austrian daybed named ‘Constanze’ is typical for Mid-Century Modern design from Austria. The tufted leather seat and back is constructed with a slick and clean metal frame. The elegant slim outwards tapered legs create an open feeling and give the sofa the needed air to come across less solid and robust. By only one hand movement, the piece turns from a comfortable sofa to a daybed. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
