Jorge Zalszupin Brasiliana sofa L'Atelier Brazil 1959

About the Item

A beautiful and sophisticated so called ‘Brasiliana’ sofa designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. With its thin frame and large cushions, the Sofá e Poltrona Brasiliana or Brasiliana sofa has a very unique look. The striking framework, which is on the outside, is made from folded Jacaranda rosewood plywood and is curling outwards on the corners. Both the sofa and chair have been designed to be made up from the same parts, a sofa could be made when connected in the middle. Joinery is connected with steel plates and brass hardware, that at the same time function as spacers and give a very airy look. Normally it was more common to see sofas that were made to be more formal, with short seats and high backrests. For the time it was created in, in both structural and philosophical sense the Brasiliana model is a true homage towards the progressive mindset of the Brazilian architectural movement, hence the name. The sofa has a stunning rosewood veneer with beautiful veins running through the entire sofa. The woodwork was restored, and upholstery redone in a beautiful green suede upholstery. Original rosewood buttons were made to finish this sofa to its original condition. The sofa has the original L’Atelier label on the bottom and is numbered on the sides as well. One of my personal favourites from Zalszupin’s Oeuvre. This stunning trolley is probably the most iconic piece designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Carrinho de Chá or tea trolley originates from 1959 and is considered a timeless classic amongst collectors. The cart can be moved around freely and is built from various materials: a solid iron frame black painted, supports a large origami like bottom shelf. Another shelf sculpted out of solid jacaranda rosewood is placed on top and serves as a removable serving tray which can be used both sides. Two rather large but open brass wheels are placed at the bottom and are a great distinctive feature as the solid brass draws...
