Jorge Zalszupin Manhattan Sofa L'atelier Brazil 1960

About the Item

Super rare and fully original ‘Manhattan’ sofa designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L'Atelier, Brazil 1960. Since few were made by L’Atelier, the Manhattan series is considered to be one of the rarest designs created by Zalszupin. Unlike other outspoken designs, it is a playful shape that argues where forms change into new ones, causing the overall functions to disappear from the whole and at the same time create a visually impressive and inviting appearance. A hard horizontal line cuts through the organic shape and separates the smooth leatherette surfaces. Carefully placed buttons in the seat hold the leather in neatly position. The tapered bottom side is in contrast with the top side and takes away some of the heaviness. This sofa is upholstered in its original black shiny leatherette which almost looks like a lacquered finish. But it has the texture of leather and gives that a more natural look. The condition of the upholstery is very good, age considered. The leatherette has some small marks and the inside foam might have lost a little of its puffiness. The sofa looks like a light weight since it is hollow, but the metal structure creating the shape of the sofa, also provides weight and stability. In addition to the sofa, we also have a lounge chair available which can be found in another listing. Have a look at the 360* video tour from the Jorge Zalszupin exhibition >   Video tour Like all our upholstered pieces these can also be newly upholstered to your admiration. Ask our experienced upholstery department for an affordable quote for the item you want customized. We only use the best quality fabrics, foam, and materials for all our items. With the reupholstery we will keep the originality in mind so the piece doesn’t lose its value and will be ready for years of use again.

  • Jorge Zalszupin tea cart L'Atelier Brazil 1959
    By Jorge Zalszupin
    Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
This stunning trolley is probably the most iconic piece designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured in his own company L’Atelier, Brazil 1959. The Carrinho de Chá or tea trolley originates from 1959 and is considered a timeless classic amongst collectors. The cart can be moved around freely and is built from various materials: a solid iron frame black painted, supports a large origami like bottom shelf. Another shelf sculpted out of solid jacaranda rosewood is placed on top and serves as a removable serving tray which can be used both sides. Two rather large but open brass wheels are placed at the bottom and are a great distinctive feature as the solid brass draws...

  • Jorge Zalszupin Unique Sideboard L'atelier, 1960
    By Jorge Zalszupin
    Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Stunning and unique made sideboard designed by Jorge Zalszupin and manufactured by his own comany L'Atelier, Brazil 1960. This is a unique sideboard designed especially for a customer’s holiday home in Biarritz, France 1960. This sideboard is comparable to the modular system designed by Zalszupin in 1959. The difference is that this sideboard has much more elegant round legs on the corners and doors and is partly covered with leather. This was also seen at the modular system sometimes at the doors or panels. It has 3 drawers in the middle and on the left and right of that there are the leather covered folding doors. The sideboard is in fully original condition and the leather has a nice patina from age and usage. This comes from an interior with several pieces by Zalszupin which were imported from Brazil in the early 1960s. All the features this sideboard shows were also used by Zalszupin in other designs, the leather handles in his desks, the legs with the Jockey chairs...
