About the Item

A striking sofa settee designed by Leon Rosen in the Art Deco taste for The Pace Collection, New York, NY, executed a rich highly figured burlwood veneer. The impressive piece is crafted with a dramatically contoured U-shaped case in a stunning burlwood veneer, finished in a warm amber-brown high-gloss lacquer. From the front, the sofa reads as a clean, rectilinear sofa with broad block arms and a long apron resting on stepped plinth feet, but from the sides and back, the design reveals a gracefully contoured waterfall back and a sweeping curved outer wall that wraps around the seating area. The continuous burlwood shell creates a cocoon-like shelter effect, while the subtle stepped panels break up the otherwise uniform back and lend it depth adding to the waterfall effect.. The interior is upholstered in deep black suede style fabric with a soft and comfortable nap. The sofa has three loose fitted seat cushions and a continuous upholstered backrest sunk into the wood frame. The vivid dazzling woodgrain patterns and dark upholstery provide stark contrast and intrigue. This sofa exemplifies everything wonderful about Art Deco design with exotic materials and impressive sculptural influences. Made in the manner and style of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (French 1879-1933). The case is sturdy and solid with excellent joinery and craftsmanship in exceptional condition as seen in photos. From an estate in San Francisco, CA.
