About the Item

Nwa-Mulamula’s Chaise (Rustica Desert) is a large, sculptural low chairs upholstered in taupe Rustica Desert leather. It is the second edition of this design, following from the previous version in dark navy leather. The chaise marks fashion designer Rich Mnisi’s breakthrough into collectible furniture. With its rounded, sensual forms and imposing physicality, this upholstered leather piece is in homage to the memory of Rich’s late great-great-grand mother, whose teachings have lived on in his family generation after generation. Like his 2018 fashion collection of the same name, the chaise takes its title from this central matriarch – “Nwa-Mulamula” means “guardian”. Rich has said: “She is a sacred, powerful and spiritual component of my being – although she rests as a guardian in an ancestral realm, her spirit, lessons and sacrifices have defied temporal limitations,” he has said. “I see her as symbol to pay homage to the role of African mothers whose stories are either seldom documented or given the light they deserve.” A designer at the very forefront of African fashion, Rich Mnisi founded his eponymous label in 2015. Born in Johannesburg in 1991, he graduated from LISOF School of Fashion in 2014 and was named Africa Fashion International Young Designer of the Year at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa that same year. Widely heralded for his fusion of contemporary pop culture and traditional African heritage, Rich’s designs infuse his own personal narrative into extremist yet minimalist structures. His work has made international headlines in media outlets such as i-D, Vice, VOGUE and WWD. He draws influences from film, music and photography, and he frequently art directs editorial and campaign shoots.
