About

A magnificent Igbo wooden stool from Nigeria.

The Igbo homeland occupies a broad area of present day central Nigeria, north of the Niger River Delta. The Igbo People trace their origins to the region’s earliest hunters and gathers, who settled there nearly 5,000 years ago.

This stool is sculpted from a single block of wood and showcases the exceptional abilities of a master hand. Geometric patterns incised on the stool’s legs enhance its appearance. For an almost identical example, possibly by the same carver, see Ginzberg, Marc, African Forms, Skira Editore, Italy, 2000, p. 22.

Provenance: private U.K. collection.
