This is an antique primitive-style stool from Japan. Its quiet presence carries both the strength of a sculptural object and a simple, rustic beauty. The clean form, free from unnecessary ornamentation, reflects the understated character often found in traditional Japanese furniture. Even when placed alone in a space, it leaves a strong and memorable impression. It was likely made in the mid-Showa period (1950s–1970s). Crafted by hand by a Japanese artisan of the time, the stool is made from solid wood, though the exact species cannot be identified. When handled, however, it reveals a substantial weight and density, conveying the powerful character of the material itself. This sense of mass and solidity gives the piece the presence of a sculptural work as much as a functional piece of furniture. One of the most distinctive features of this stool is that it has been carved from a single block of wood. The legs are not attached separately but are part of the same piece, shaped directly from the original timber. The three legs spread outward organically, creating a bold and natural form that appears almost as if it were shaped by nature itself.
