Japanese Old Primitive Stool 1950s-1970s / Side Chair Wabisabi
About the Item
This is an antique primitive-style stool from Japan. Its quiet presence carries both the strength of a sculptural object and a simple, rustic beauty. The clean form, free from unnecessary ornamentation, reflects the understated character often found in traditional Japanese furniture. Even when placed alone in a space, it leaves a strong and memorable impression.
It was likely made in the mid-Showa period (1950s–1970s). Crafted by hand by a Japanese artisan of the time, the stool is made from solid wood, though the exact species cannot be identified. When handled, however, it reveals a substantial weight and density, conveying the powerful character of the material itself. This sense of mass and solidity gives the piece the presence of a sculptural work as much as a functional piece of furniture.
One of the most distinctive features of this stool is that it has been carved from a single block of wood. The legs are not attached separately but are part of the same piece, shaped directly from the original timber. The three legs spread outward organically, creating a bold and natural form that appears almost as if it were shaped by nature itself. Depending on the viewing angle, the silhouette changes subtly, offering different visual expressions. The carving marks and flowing curves remain visible, and these traces of the artisan’s hand contribute greatly to the character of the piece.
Another striking aspect is the deep, glossy black finish. The dark, polished surface reflects light softly, creating subtle highlights and shadows across the powerful form. While the design is bold and primitive, the refined black surface lends the stool a somewhat modern impression as well. This balance allows the piece to integrate beautifully into contemporary interiors despite its rustic origins.
The stool is also very stable in practical use, with no wobbling. Though compact in size, it possesses a strong presence and can function not only as a stool but also as a sculptural object or display stand. Placed in a gallery space, hotel interior, or residential living area, it serves as an eye-catching accent piece that combines furniture and sculpture.
It will be carefully packed and safely shipped from Japan.
