A pair of antique French Louis XV style square stools circa 1895 from the Belle Époque period with their original painted and gilded finish. The charming scale of these stools give them a lovely appearance and make them an excellent choice for additional seating in a room designed for conversation. The stools take their inspiration from the elegant designs of the Louis XV period (1723-1774) in France where curved lines adorned with lovely carved details was highly prized. All four legs on each stool have the familiar cabriole shape with its beautifully sloping curved profile. Each foot terminates in a shape known as a "coquille" named after the seashell from which it takes its shape. The knee of each leg (where the leg pushes out the farthest from the seat) is highlighted with an additional raised carving incorporating both scrolls and flourishes. The apron that connects the four legs also possesses a curved profile and includes scrolls augmented by a deep groove along the edge designed to emphasize the line. The original cream painted finished is used as a background colour for the gilded paint that defines the raised carving and sensual line of the stools around the perimetre. These pieces were always considered a handy addition to a room because of their elegant appearance and their ease of movement when additional seating was desired while entertaining. In the twenty-first century this practical aspect remains desirable in many interiors. The seats have been freshly upholstered in a spring green contemporary woven fabric found in France that imparts a contemporary sense of fashion.
