A wonderful collectors A&F signed example of the original Hippopotamus footstool by Dimitri Omersa for Abercrombie and Fitch, circa 1970 in beautiful deep and dark waxed patina leather finish throughout. This example is signed with the A&F logo under one ear as can be seen in the photos, has the early nailheads under its feet, and is in excellent collectors condition. Sturdy and structurally sound, this large Hippo is ready to be used as a footstool or stool as it can support the weight of a child or a small to average sized adult. Omersa's have so much personality and character - each one was hand made, this one approximately 50 years ago, and each of the 50 or so years this one has lived - it has developed its own stories to tell through its aged patina, it's no wonder most Omersa owners have developed personal relationship with theirs - not too much different than a house pet. We love our personal Omersa's that we keep at home, they always make us smile. A client of ours got one after his dog had passed, he said he wasn't ready yet for another - so an Omersa became the perfect friend at a time in need. Omersa's designed leather animals for Omersa Leatherworks of England, Omersa & Company, Libertys of London and Abercrombie and Fitch. Excellent early production and signed original of this design, making this an ideal collectors example or for an interior design client looking for the perfect finishing piece. Omersa made his first leather animal, a pig, in 1927 and from there created a full suite of interesting and charismatic creatures. Each leather animal is of the highest quality, beautifully stained and waxed. This example is one of the earlier ones, which are not only much more rare but also highly sought after by collectors therefore very few on the resale market.
