The great portfolio of Charles and Ray Eames is widely celebrated and serves as a model of inspiration for designers to this day. A momentous chapter in said portfolio is devoted to an important commission the Eames’ team received to design furniture for the Time Life Building in New York City which included a series of tables and most important; the Eames “Time Life” Executive Chair.
For the lobby of the Time Life Building, larger than “life” lounge seating was designed. The Eames’ intentions were to capture the comfort of their popular Eames lounge chair in a more streamlined fashion using lessons learned from their aluminum group range. The shown model 675 is the earliest and rarest of the suite, most akin to the original design commissioned for the Time Life Building’s lobby. This iteration chair features a lounge swivel base which is set back at the perfect pitch for ultimate comfort. Herman Miller discontinued this Lobby Lounge version of the chair sometime in the 1990s, making it quite a sought after Eames collector’s item.
