An exceptional Austrian polychrome-painted marriage chest, with iron-hinged rectangular lid and a plain pine interior with a lidded candle box, with three recessed panels and two raised panels, depicting flowers in vases and birds, with raised and turned posts decorated in alternating red and black flame painting, with mottled sides, each terminating in arched cutouts, on a shaped stylized base, inscribed in Old German and dated:
'Marya Mader 1737.' Retains original elaborate large key (4.5 inches).
