About

An extremely rare late 14th-early 15th century medieval oak iron bound round topped parish chest (officially: Kist der Barmhartigheid; Chest of mercy), the Southern Netherlands, circa. 1390-1430.

The entire length of the chest is clad with vertical forged-iron strips nailed down all around, as is the round topped lid, to which are attached three iron hasps, each fastened on the lid by a hinge. At the other end of each hasp is a hole for a staple that is attached to the chest. Locking is achieved with a padlock, the bolt of which is passed through the staple. Three locks were fitted to spread the responsibility of security and to ensure that no single person ever had access to the chest contents, the priest held one of the three keys while his two churchwardens retained the other two.

Chest has a small interior safe, and is in perfect condition.

Provenance: Private collection.
