French Louis XIII Leather Trunk with Antique Nailhead Trim, Early 1800s

An early 18th century Louis XIII style coffer or trunk handcrafted of solid old growth French walnut having a beautiful rich and dark color patina, circa 1710. This handsome trunk features typical Renaissance style geometric carvings like the raised lozenge on the front and raised à pointe de diamants or diamond tipped decoration on the side panels. Raised on bun feet. Original iron handles and hardware. Coffers and trunks were used to keep all sorts of treasures under lock and key while still functioning as seats, tables, and even beds for children...

An excellent example of the classic dome top Spanish "arcón" or travel chest / trunk. Constructed of wood, the exterior is completely covered in a dark brown leather and the top and front feature studded brass nails arranged in decorative patterns. The nailheads themselves are decorated with raised star shape. The functioning lock mechanism (key included), hasp and side carry handles are original and made of wrought iron. 17th century French leather coffer, chest or trunk with nailhead detail from burgundy on newer wooden base.   

This is an unusually long Gothic style trunk from France, measuring nearly 6.5 feet long. It is carved from thick oak planks, and it dates to circa 1800. The trunk has well carved characteristic Gothic ornamentation on all of the front panels, while the rest of the piece remains simple, except a small molding to the lid. The big oak panels are joined by dowel reinforced mortise and tenon construction. The long single plank lid is attached by iron hinges and opens to reveal a large rectangular space which reveals how all the boards were assembled. There is also a latch and keyhole at the center.
