Early English Oak Chest
About the Item
Early English oak chest: joined English paneled coffer, constructed in the late 17th or early 18th century. Used to store and protect a household's fine linens, clothing and valuables.
This chest features carved nulling across the top of its front side between its uprights and daisy wheels within double-bordered lozenges upon its two front panels. A hinged lid opens to reveal the chest's original till (a small compartment used to segregate small valuables from the linens stored inside). The initials "I T" (the original, or perhaps later, owner) are also inscribed upon the front panels.
Wonderful condition with an old, rich patina. It's function is the same today as it was three hundred years ago, storage, seating or used as a small table.
Note: Original/early finish on antique and vintage metal will include some, or all, of the following: patina, scaling, light rust, discoloration, and corrosion. Regional differences in humidity and climate during shipping may cause antique and vintage wood to shrink and/or split along its grain, veneer to loosen and/or peel, and painted finishes and gilt to crack and flake.
