Exquisitely hand-crafted in Paris, France in the first half of the 18th century, during the remarkable King Louis XV period (1715-1774), fine quality craftsmanship, construction and luxurious materials, featuring a solid wood frame with patinated metal mounts wrapped in animal hide binding to top and front, dual rolled iron carry handles at sides, slatted back and sturdy plank boarded verso, having a hinged dome top, open to original plaid flannel fabric lined interior, retaining maker's label under lid, signed La Forest. circa 1725

Marvelously hand-crafted chest from the late 1600s or early 1700s.
One of the things that make antiques so appealing & attractive is the fact that most pieces were handmade in recognizable styles, with proven techniques AND with natural materials that could and would stand the test of time. The longer back in time we go, the more that seems to be the case. This amazing chest from circa 1680-1720 is clearly made in the Gothic Style with Gothic church window-like carvings. With Gothic style chests of this age being very rare, we were (and still are) very enthousiastic about finding it. Put together and strengthened with hand-forged, wrought iron brackets, nails AND with very large dovetails, the master carpenter provided the techniques that would guarantee the owner a chest that would last him (or her) a lifetime. As it turned out, his workmanship, in this case, created a chest that has already served some 15 generations. This heavy quality chest is made of solid elm and wrought iron only and the centuries of usage and natural aging have given this Gothic antique a patina that is simply heavenly. A very impressive Westphalian Gothic chest or ‚Stollentruhe’, Westphalia, Germany, circa 1500-1550. Wrought iron mounted oak, partially carved. The monumental rectangular standing chest with full-height stiles, extensively mounted with wrought ironwork straps terminating in quatrefoil finials which ’wrap’ around the chest edges. These are fixed with convex head nails. The ironwork with some remains of an originally red painted surface. In addition, running along the edges of the lid at the front and sides is a plain iron band, close-nailed. The feet of the two front legs are finely carved on the front face, in low relief with a rectangular arched ’panel’ depicting on the left a lion, on the right a dragon holding each a coat of arms.
Regarding the age of circa 500 years, this coffer is in exceptionally good condition, with only smaller restorations.

This beautiful trunk or blanket chest was made in the Northern part of Austria, at the time the center of the Habsburg monarchy. The piece was made in the late 18th century circa 1780. It was completely made in solid pine by the use of traditional woodworking techniques. The sides were joined by classic dovetail joints and the mold was attached by the use of wooden pens. The trunk was decorated with simple painted motifs and ornaments typical for the northern Austrian region where the piece originates. It has a sky blue base color and was decorated with painted panels throughout. The panels have a warm red base color surrounded by a white frame. The front panels were decorated with simple vases...
