American Chippendale Cherry Armoire Shrank, Prob. Pennsylvania, circa 1770-1790

About the Item

A powerful architectural object, this Fine shrank with tombstone door panels was crafted of solid cherry primary woods, probably in Pennsylvania during the last quarter of the 18th century. The piece is built as a single unit, not breaking down or separating. Noteworthy is the rather restrained dimension of the overall armoire, allowing it to be a part of the room without dominating or overwhelming it. The slight projecting crest is punctuated with bold dentil molding over a pair of broad doors that swing open on forged iron hinges to reveal a shelved interior. Each door has raised paneling, the upper panels with a tombstone form over the rectangular lower paneling; these are flanked by a series of recessed panels emphasized with molding. Below the doors are two graduated rows of drawers, the trio of upper drawers with a single brass knob and the single broad lower drawer with faux drawer fronts simulating a trio of drawers, each recessed panel with later batwing brasses replacing what originally would have been knobs. This drawer employs a rather individual stop in the back of the drawer, utilizing an extension of the lower dovetails to effectively halt the drawer at the correct distance into the case. The back of the case is built using three vertical pine boards with original rosehead nails and the entire unit rests over turned bun feet. Pure and incredibly striking, the shrank is particularly effective in today’s classical home for it’s size, lending itself perfectly to the small study, living room or office. Originally designed as a clothes press, the case works beautifully as a bookcase with it’s large spacious shelving and the convenient organization of the lower drawers. Measurements: 59 3/8” W x 19 1/2” D x 67” H Condition Report: Old surface, not original; discoloration/wear/oxidization throughout; some age cracks and old hinge breakouts. Missing a piece of molding in a bottom recessed panel. Piece of crest molding replaced on rear corner and patched on upper left corner of front. Square patch to proper right side. Holes in the backboards with strip added to seal gap. Bottom right drawer sticks, right door swings open (no key). Replaced hardware on drawers (originally all knobs).
